Content Management System Enhancements
WordPress launched Full Site Editing (FSE) with the release of version 5.9 in January 2022. It’s a continuation of the Gutenberg project and is revolutionizing the way we build our templates in CMS. Consequently, it’s a boost in web site development and above all it offers customers greater flexibility and performance in managing their site.
What is FSE? Like it spells out, it allows you to build your website templates with the complete page including headers and footers. Previously, the headers and footers would be stored in separate files, and therefore any changes required a separate action. More actions means more pieces and potentially greater risk of error, but also just more time in managing the moving parts. This would impact maintenance costs and other related issues.
Since 2024 we have begun building our sites with this new technology, and the return on our research and development has met all our expectations and more. We launched two new projects this year using FSE and Gutenberg as our building tool, including NATO Space COE. Several advantages to this decision can be highlighted:
- From a technical side developers now have the ability to quickly and intuitively create content templates (compositions, models), on all types of content and for all variations. Managing headers, footers and navigations is also much easier, thanks to the use of Gutenberg blocks in all parts of the website. Further, caching page templates ensures even greater performance of the sites delivered.
- On the client side, website administrators can add new content and manage templates in the different types of content much more easily and visually, with a complete visualization of future pages created.
WordPress is moving closer and closer to a no-code platform, while keeping its core features that offer developers and web agencies an easy to use CMS. Customers can continue to download the millions of plugins available to enhance their web experience.
